![]() ![]() When you first launch the app, you'll see two default notebooks. The app was just updated this week and is currently on sale for 99 cents. With MagicalPad, you can take notes and brainstorm on a freeform, page-less layout. MagicalPad HD has five stars in the app store, and this seems like an accurate score as long as you’re sure that this is the type of app you’re looking for.Just because paper notebooks have things called pages doesn't mean a virtual notebooks need to have them. But if you’re a student who would probably be using this app mainly to take notes during class and you might be overestimating how often you use flowcharts, you might be better off getting a less expensive app designed mainly for handwritten notes. There doesn’t seem to be a limit to how big you can make a single page, and its no-nonsense interface with easy-to-understand buttons and a clear workspace makes it the ultimate in orderliness.įor people who make use of the many organizational tools this app has to offer often, I think this could be the app you’ve been dreaming of. ![]() If you don’t intend to take timed notes with MagicalPad HD and find yourself feeling constantly boxed in by the lack of space in other apps, you could really benefit from getting this app. If you prefer typing, the MagicalPad bubble actually expands as you write, meaning that you wouldn’t have the problem that I’ve been experiencing.Īnd perhaps I’ve been using the app wrong to begin with. It’s a decidedly uncomfortable transition, and makes me think that the app is not really meant for taking lecture notes, at least not handwritten notes. What this meant for me is that whenever I had filled up the allotted space (my iPad screen) with my too-large handwriting, I had to quickly finish the note, move it to wherever I wanted it on the screen, and make another note, all the while continuing to listen to my teacher. If you’re having difficulty picturing what I’m saying, please look at the picture above. You can put two or more notes close together so that they look like a single note, but you have to make a different note each time you want to do this. The whole page kind of functions like a flowchart, in that you have multiple bubbles of text that are inherently separate from each other. But I found myself almost exclusively using the handwriting tool, which I think suffers from the style that this app employs. In that way, it’s probably one of the best organizational tools out there. It’s the virtual equivalent of spreading everything you need out on a large desk in front of you. That is, you can have written notes, pictures, and extensive charts all on one page without it feeling cramped or confusing at all. There’s no question that it accomplishes what it set out to do very well. At this point, I’ve had a few months to use it, and I have to say that I have mixed feelings about it. Eventually, however, my desire for a single workspace on my iPad won out. I was incredibly hesitant about buying it at first though, given the fact that it was as expensive as some major games in the app store. Handwriting, pictures, bullet pointed lists, and flow charts were definitely the major selling point of this application. Not only does it allow for the creation of separate “notebooks,” but there seem to be few limitations on what you can do with it. So you can imagine how excited I was the first time I saw Magicalpad HD. I wanted something that allowed me to think outside the box when faced with creative difficulties. I wanted something to take handwritten notes with. I wanted something that I could organize. Despite the fact that I started my search for the perfect notebook app within the first week of my owning an iPad, to this day I remain dissatisfied. I’ve gone from the obvious choice (pages) to popular apps for handwriting like Bamboo Paper and Penultimate. Let’s start off by setting the scene, shall we? I, probably like almost every iPad user out there, am constantly hunting for the best notebook app I can get my hands on. ![]()
